Many buyers shop for a home the same way: Driving through pleasant neighborhoods until they see a home they like, then calling the listing agent to show them the home. There is good and bad in this process.

THE GOOD: Driving through neighborhoods is a fine way for most buyers to get a feel of the areas they might like.

The BAD: When a buyer calls a listing agent without representation, he or she is left  vulnerable. It is the job of the listing agent to get the best price and terms for the seller only.

Therefore, smart buyers interview a few agents to find out what type of services each can provide and find out which agents are a personally good fit. Agents who work with specific buyers are called "buyer's agents." The buyer's agent's loyalty is to his or her client - the buyer. What does it cost a buyer to use a "buyer's agent"?

A buyer's agent costs the buyer NOTHING because he or she is paid from the seller's net proceeds!

If I don't use a buyer's agent, can I save the cost of the fee?

NO. That fee is part of a separate agreement between the seller and the listing agent and not included in the purchase contract. The listing agent would make twice as much and your interests, as the buyer, will go unrepresented. 

What if I see a "For Sale By Owner" house I like? Will they work with buyer's agents?
